Dan Hurley Explains Why He Turned Down Lakers Coaching Job

Dan Hurley has shared why he decided not to take the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Lakers and instead stay at the University of Connecticut (UConn). Hurley wants to chase a third straight NCAA title with the UConn Huskies.

Hurley’s wife, Andrea, wanted him to stay at UConn, but she was ready to support him if he chose the Lakers. Under Hurley’s leadership over the past six years, UConn has enjoyed great success, including two national championships and a strong record of 68-11 in the last two seasons.

In an interview with Graham Bensinger on 'In Depth,' Hurley said he chose to stay at UConn because he believes he can have a bigger impact on his players' lives as a college coach. He feels this personal connection is harder to achieve in the NBA.

When asked about his future in the NBA, Hurley was unsure, saying, "I don’t know. If you’re not going to take the Lakers job, then what job are you going to take?" He emphasized the special role of a college coach in shaping young men’s futures.

Hurley admitted that telling his team about his decision was the toughest part. For now, it looks like he will continue to focus on college basketball and his current role with UConn.
