Joaquin Phoenix has spoken out about the controversial ending of Joker: Folie à Deux, the sequel to the 2019 hit Joker. The film has not done well at the box office since its release and has faced criticism from fans and critics.

In Folie à Deux, Arthur Fleck, also known as the Joker, is on trial for the murders he committed in the first movie. The film also introduces Lee Quinzel (played by Lady Gaga), a new version of the character Harley Quinn.

At the end of the movie, Fleck gives up being the Joker and goes back to prison. In the final scene, another prisoner comes up to him and offers to tell him a joke. Instead, the prisoner stabs Fleck multiple times and carves a smile into his own face. Fleck dies on the floor, bleeding out.

This scene has divided fans, with many upset about the ending. However, both Phoenix and the film’s director, Todd Phillips, have defended the scene in a new interview.

Phoenix said the moment had a "warmth" to it, explaining that the young prisoner was nervous about telling his joke, and Fleck was willing to listen.

Phillips added that the scene shows Arthur Fleck finally accepting who he is. He believes the Joker dies at peace, still holding onto a small bit of hope, even though things go wrong for him once again.

While many viewers see the ending as dark and sad, Phillips says it's actually a sign that Fleck still has hope and kindness inside him.
