Christian McCaffrey's misfortune struck the San Francisco 49ers during their first loss of the season against the Cleveland Browns.

The star running back suffered an oblique injury in the third quarter, which ultimately impacted the Niners' performance. Initially labeled as questionable late in the third quarter when the 49ers were trailing 13-10, McCaffrey demonstrated his resilience by returning to the game.

However, his return was short-lived, and he was officially ruled out in the early part of the fourth quarter, with San Francisco holding a 17-13 lead. The setback was compounded by the absence of Deebo Samuel, who had been ruled out earlier in the game due to a shoulder injury, limiting his playing time to just eight snaps.

The extent of their injuries remained uncertain as Niners coach Kyle Shanahan stated they didn't yet have a complete understanding of their severity. McCaffrey's contributions in his limited playing time were noteworthy, amassing 52 yards on 14 touches and scoring San Francisco's first touchdown with a 13-yard catch-and-run.

This touchdown also allowed him to tie an NFL record for the most consecutive games with a scrimmage touchdown, an impressive feat in an otherwise disappointing game. In McCaffrey's absence, Elijah Mitchell and Jordan Mason took up the mantle, sharing the running back responsibilities.

Mason's touchdown in the fourth quarter helped the Niners take a late lead. McCaffrey and Samuel now have some extra time to recover, as the 49ers won't be back in action until next Monday night when they face the Minnesota Vikings in Week 7.
