Gerrit Cole Dominates In Unanimous Fashion, Secures First Cy Young Award For Stellar 2023 Performance

In a season marked by challenges for the New York Yankees, Gerrit Cole emerged as a shining star, securing his first American League Cy Young Award in a unanimous vote. 

Cole's outstanding performance throughout the 2023 campaign solidified his place among the elite pitchers of his generation. The 33-year-old right-hander's remarkable season featured a 15-4 record, a 2.63 ERA, and an impressive 222 strikeouts in 33 starts. 

His ERA led the American League and ranked second in the Majors, only trailing Blake Snell of the Padres. Cole's dominance on the mound propelled him to become the first Yankee since Roger Clemens in 2001 to claim the prestigious Cy Young Award.

Reflecting on his achievement, Cole expressed pride in his season and acknowledged the inspiration he drew from past Yankees Cy Young winners. Joining the ranks of legends like Bob Turley, Whitey Ford, and Roger Clemens, Cole emphasized the impact of those who set a high example for what it means to be a great Yankee.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman hailed Cole as "one of the absolute best of his generation," highlighting the pitcher's dedication to continuous improvement and his leadership both on and off the field.

Manager Aaron Boone echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that the Cy Young recognition was "richly deserved" for Cole, who had previously come close to the honor in 2019 and 2021. Boone praised Cole's talent, dedication, and the privilege of managing such a driven player.

Cole's statistical achievements in 2023 were nothing short of impressive. Leading the Majors in WHIP (0.98) and opponents’ on-base percentage (.259), he also tied for the lead in quality starts (24) and shutouts (two). Notably, he allowed two runs or fewer in 26 of his 33 starts, showcasing consistency and reliability on the mound.

Looking ahead to the 2024 season, Cole, known for his perfectionism, is already focused on refining his game. He identified the command of his offspeed pitch as an area for improvement, demonstrating his commitment to continual growth.

As the Yankees celebrate Cole's historic achievement, the ace pitcher remains dedicated to contributing to the team's success and upholding the storied legacy of great Yankees pitchers.
