USA Basketball's decision to exclude Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark from the 2024 Olympic Games roster has sparked controversy.

According to USA Today columnist Christine Brennan, two sources revealed that one reason for leaving Clark out was the potential backlash from her fans over her likely limited playing time.

Clark, who has experience with USA Basketball junior national teams, was a star at Iowa. The sources Brennan cited are described as "long-time U.S. basketball veterans with decades of experience in the women’s game."

The decision led to strong reactions on social media, with many fans expressing their displeasure. Brennan noted this response seemed to confirm that some in the WNBA are uncomfortable with Clark's rising popularity.

"If true, that would be an extraordinary admission of the existence of real tension that the old guard of women’s basketball harbors for this multimillion-dollar sensation," Brennan wrote.
