The Los Angeles Lakers are gearing up to make a significant offer to UConn men's basketball coach Dan Hurley, sources tell ESPN. Hurley, who has led UConn to back-to-back NCAA championships, is a top candidate for the Lakers' head coaching position.

Preliminary talks have begun, and discussions are expected to intensify in the coming days. Lakers executives Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss are keen to discuss their vision with Hurley, highlighting his tactical skills and player development expertise.

Hurley, 51, has expressed interest in coaching in the NBA and is open to exploring a partnership with the Lakers. He informed UConn players about the Lakers' interest during practice on Thursday.

The Lakers' pursuit of Hurley comes 20 years after a similar attempt to hire Duke's Mike Krzyzewski. The changing landscape of college sports and the increasing challenges of NIL fundraising have made such moves more feasible.

LeBron James is reportedly impressed with Hurley's coaching style, which could influence his decision to stay with the Lakers. James has not directly discussed the coaching search but supports the Lakers' decision-making process.

Anthony Davis will be a key part of the discussions on the new head coach, ensuring alignment on both offense and defense strategies.

The Lakers have also interviewed other candidates, including James Borrego, JJ Redick, Sam Cassell, and David Adelman. However, Hurley remains their primary focus.

Hurley has a strong track record with a 141-58 record at UConn and a history of success in the NCAA tournament. His potential move to the Lakers would have significant implications for both college basketball and the NBA.
