According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Nick Nurse has reached an agreement to become the new head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers.

Nurse, who was named Coach of the Year in 2020, previously served as the head coach of the Toronto Raptors for five seasons.

During his tenure, he guided the Raptors to their historic NBA championship victory in 2019. Now, the 76ers are hoping that Nurse can lead them back to the Finals for the first time since 2001.

Interestingly, Nurse has a prior connection with 76ers general manager Daryl Morey. He coached the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, the G League affiliate of Morey's former team, the Houston Rockets, from 2011 to 2013.

Nurse's successful coaching stint with the Vipers, which culminated in a championship win, eventually earned him an assistant coaching position in Toronto.

Since then, he has established himself as one of the premier coaches in the NBA. Taking charge of the 76ers, Nurse inherits a team that has faced several disappointments in recent playoff runs. In 2019, Nurse's Raptors eliminated the Sixers in the second round with Kawhi Leonard's iconic Game 7 buzzer-beater.

Under the guidance of former coach Doc Rivers, the 76ers were eliminated in the second round for three consecutive years, including as the top seed in the Eastern Conference in 2021. They also fell short against Boston this season despite holding a 3-2 series lead. Consequently, the team decided to part ways with Rivers earlier this month.

Nurse now faces the challenge of revitalizing the 76ers. Although they still boast the talents of reigning MVP Joel Embiid, the future of James Harden, his key teammate, remains uncertain as he approaches free agency.

Speculation suggests that Harden might return to the Houston Rockets. Given the limited options available to replace Harden, a coaching upgrade becomes crucial in compensating for any potential loss.

Fortunately, Nurse's reputation precedes him as one of the NBA's finest coaches. Known for his defensive prowess and ability to make effective in-game adjustments, he is widely regarded as a coaching genius.

Despite potential roster changes, Nurse's expertise and leadership will undoubtedly maximize the potential of the 76ers' remaining players in the upcoming season.
